The Ford E -Series nameplate ran from 1960 through to 2014 and has only been outlasted by the F-Series. The model range consisted of a cargo van, pickup truck and a passenger van. It debuted on 21 September 1960 and went on sale in 1961.
The 1968 Ford E-Series, revolutionized the van somewhat. Ford moved the engine nearly all the way to the front under a shorter bonnet which also allowed the option of a factory 302 V8. Earlier versions featured round headlights. The later versions to 2014, like this van, featured double square headlights.
The Econoline was never delivered to Australia and with the difficulty of left-hand-drive conversions, they could never compete with our own van culture perpetuated by the Holden Sandman and Falcon Sundowner.
This van has been customized as a limited edition by Delmar Motor Coach USA, a company which appears to have gone out of business in the late 90’s. Inside is more functional than your normal van: additional bench seating, a small dining table, wood veneer cupboards, storage space and a sink. The plush carpet is super cool and period correct. If there was a choice between a Jayco and this Econoline, there’d be no contest!
The original American owner was from Illinois and was a pilot who had plates “AIRJAM” for the vehicle. These plates come with the vehicle. This is a fully optioned vehicle and today looks as it would have when new.
It was specially imported from the USA in 2006 to obtain a professional RHD conversion for a fastidious collector and enthusiast. Documentation including engineering certificates, importation papers and operating manuals also come with the vehicle. It has previously been fully registered in NSW by the one registered owner since importation.
The van has had a protected existence for its entire life and when recently photographed it had a meagre 13,031 miles (20,971 km) on the clock. The van is a treasure for another reason. Amazingly it is in such completely original condition that it even smells factory fresh. Normally, photographs tend to glamorise a car, but it is not possible for the camera to exaggerate the quality of this treasure.
An immaculately presented and extremely rare classic van this can be used as a 7 seat people mover or a mobile home. This is a true timepiece from the 80’s.
Symbolised by legendary characters such as the A-Team and Scoobie Doo, this Ford is an eye catcher that stands out in the crowd. It offers so much more, than say the VW Kombie, Australian Ford or Holden manufactured van equivalent of the era – luxury, room and V8 performance in a small mobile home.
